Possible Change to State of Wisconsin Group Health Insurance

Informational Meeting September 26

September 10, 2016 - -The Group Insurance Board (GIB) and the Walker administration are actively pursuing a "self-insurance" model.  The RFP was issued in July with a decision by the Group Insurance Board expected this November with possible adoption in January of 2018.

There are no public forums or hearings scheduled on this proposal even though this is a huge change to the health insurance program for both active employees and retirees.  The GIB’s rush to implement self-insurance must be slowed down and a more careful analysis done. Contact  your state representative and senator today.  Ask them to:

  1. Insist on a full analysis of  the short and long-term impact of changing to a self-insured program.
  2. Insist on public hearings and open debate on this issue this fall.

A couple of organizations, POWRS and  ACE, have already written about some of their concerns about the plan.  POWRS (Protect Our Retirement Security) is a group of activist volunteers who seek to protect the Wisconsin Retirement System (WRS) and seek retirement security for all.  ACE (the Association of Career Employees) is a professional association that seeks to support state employees.

ACE is also planning to hold an information meeting about the self-insurance model on Monday, September 26 from 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm at Capitol Lakes, Premier Room, 333 West Main Street, Madison.
