March 2, 2022. We were all deeply saddened to learn of the passing of AFTW icon, Kathy Monaghan. Kathy served on the WFT/ AFTW Executive Board for more than 5 decades, first as secretary, and more recently as a Vice President representing retirees. She was instrumental in helping organize Local 8047R, the retiree chapter of AFTW, and served as its president for the past 17 years. She also supported and served in numerous other capacities in her local, Local 202, the Superior Federation of Teachers, in the Central Labor Council, in the Firefighters Union, and in the Democratic Party. Her life was truly a life of service to others, and she will be sorely missed by all who knew her.
In lieu of flowers, friends are encouraged to send donations to the AFTW scholarship fund in Kathy's name. Kathy was a true advocate for education and the AFTW Scholarship program was very close to her heart. She served for many, many years as the chair of the AFT-W Scholarship Committee making sure the process ran fairly and smoothly each year. She enjoyed so much reading the applications of all the remarkable young people who submitted.

Kathy J. Monaghan, 78, of Esko, MN, passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 27, 2022, at Essentia Health-Miller Dwan in Duluth, MN.
Visitation will be held from 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM, Friday, March 4, 2022, at Downs-LeSage Funeral Home, 1304 Hammond Avenue, Superior, WI, followed by a Catholic Funeral Service at 1:00 PM with Rev. Fr. James Tobolski as officiant.
Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Superior.
